Moulton’s fiddling phenom Daniel Jasek, or as he dubbed him Sunday, “the Energizer Bunny of fiddlers, for his propensity to keep coming back year after year and, even at the age of 92, still outplay most who ever even bothered picking up a bow.

As one of the only fiddlers to have played every Hallettsville gathering since before it had its catchy name, a former state champ and member of the Hall of Fame, Jasek was easily the eldest member to participate in Sunday’s Senior Division Contest.

And as usual, Jasek had members of his family in abundance to help cheer him on.

But even in the senior division last weekend, competition was stiff. Eleven elder fiddlers tossed their respective hats in the ring this year, and despite being the local favorite to win, Jasek came in with a third place ranking Sunday.

On the plus side, Jasek can rest easy know that those who beat this year made quite the journey to do so.

Winning the senior division contest was Starr McMullen, 72, of Corvor, Oregon, who made the long trek to the Hallettsville Frolics just to come check it out, she said, having always heard so many great things about it. In second place this year was Ron Jones, 71, of Duncan, Oklahoma.

Other participating included Bob Davis, 90, of Leakey; Mayo Walker, 68,of Oakland; Ed Henson,89, of Decatur; David Looper, 74, of Combine; Ann Defibaugh, 68, of Friendswood; Brent Young, 76, of Anna; Huey Buxton, 89, of Vidor; and Steve Bing, 75, of Houston.
