No instrument is more identified with German and Czech music than the tuba, and if want to hear some of those horns at their finest, you won't want to miss The TubaMeisters take the stage at 11 a.m. inside the air-conditioned main hall at the 101st annual Shiner Catholic Church Fall Picnic on Sunday, Sept. 4.

A tuba/euphonium quartet, they specialize in traditional folksongs from Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Mexico, and other countries, plus a healthy number of pop, country and golden oldies that you've probably never heard quite like this, with vocals done in five languages, no less. All with a laugh or two toss in for good measure as well.

They're not the only show in town on Sept. 4, however.

They're followed by the Shiner Hobo Band from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, also inside the Shiner KC Hall. Afterward, Czech out the Czechaholics from 4-7 p.m.

Outside, the live entertainment kicks off a whole half-hour sooner, with Vic Patek and his boys playing an array of your favorite classic hits under the Bingo stand from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Then, it's toLoveAndRescue from 12:30-3 p.m., the Yodel Blitz Band & Variety Show from 3-6:30 p.m., and Bill Pekar & the Rainey Bros. from 6:30-10:30 p.m.

But wait, as they used to say in infomercial land. They've still got more!

That's because the Emotions shut things down with their always energetic set. They'll take the main stage inside the hall from 9 p.m. to midnight.

And that's just the musical lineup. They'll got something to keep everyone going until well after the chickens have gone home to roost. Take, for instance, the many fine items they have available at the Country Store. You'll need to get early, though. Doors open at 8 a.m.

You've got the big country auction kicking off at high noon, followed by the cattle sale at 3 p.m.

Be sure to boot up for the bull riding events, too.  They'll have mechanical bull rides from 2-6 p.m., plus tons of games, face painting, ring toss, ball throw, Wheel of Fortune and a balloon artist. Bingo runs 3-7 p.m., and the big drawing for raffle prizes will be held as soon as the auction is complete.

Plus, there's a washer pitching tournament at 4 p.m., and loads more. And there's always something cold to drink over at biergarten.

Be sure and bring your appetites, too. Service lines for Shiner's three-meats dinner plates open at 10:30 a.m. and close at 2 p.m.--or, and drive-through plates can be picked up from 10:30 a.m. to whenever they run out. Then it's Shiner's famous picnic hamburgers throughout the afternoon and evening.

There's something fun for everyone, whether young or not-so-much anymore.
