January rains proved One for the record

January 2024 went into the record books as the wettest ever with a rainfall total of 10.90 inches. The amount surpassed the previous record of 8.33 inches set in 1934.

Single-day records of 3.88 inches on the 22nd and 3.92 inches on the 24th helped bolster the month’s total.

Rain fell on a dozen days, with the heaviest amounts causing rivers and streams to swell.

The Lavaca River had a crest of 21.31 causing city residents to keep a watchful eye during the downpours.

The Navidad River hit a crest of 31.57 feet at Sublime causing low-land flooding. Flood stage for the river is 27 feet.

Temperatures ranged from 77 degrees on the 11th to a near-record 17 degrees on the 17th. Records include 95 degrees on Jan. 18, 1927, and zero in 1949.The month saw pea-size hail on the 8th and ice pellets on the 15th. Thunder was heard on four days and fog was seen on six mornings.
