Last Friday’s severe thunderstorm dropped hail measuring up to 2.1 inches in and around Hallettsville. The storm cut a path through a good stretch of the county, dropping hail from pea-size up to the afore mentioned big stuff. Mixed in with heavy rain, hail from the storm system fell from west of town to past the Vsetin turnoff east of town. Norbert Sobotik said “The hail at his place two miles west of Hallettsville was golfball-size, with some of the big stuff becoming lodged on a fence.” The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Lavaca County at 3:30 p.m., before the storm passed over the city. Damage was listed as minimal as freshly planted gardens in the area were slightly harmed. The last time the city received hail was January 8 of this year when pea-size hail fell.
