  • If the weather of late has brought Lavaca County anything, it’s a reprieve from that awful triple digit heat that’s been with us since May. And the third graders over at St. Ludmilla’s Elementary School are about staying cool. So much so, in fact, they took advantage of some of their fine playground equipment recently to take a break from their studies and enjoy a little outdoor time that didn’t leave them melting. On the positive side, current weather forecasts say it should stay this way through Sunday’s

No instrument more clearly defines German and Czech music than the tuba, and if you want to play in Shiner, you better have a tuba in the band — especially if you’re headed for the 101st annual Shiner Catholic Church Fall Picnic on Sunday, Sept. 4.

And they’ve got the better part of a day dedicated to precisely that: Tubas, tubas and more tubas, starting with the TubaMeisters at 11 a.m. inside the air-conditioned main hall at the KC Park grounds.

A tuba/euphonium quartet, the San Antonio-based TubaMeisters specialize in traditional folk music from Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Mexico and other countries, plus they play a healthy number of pop, country and golden oldies that you've probably never heard quite like this.

Did someone mention vocals? They’ve got them in five languages, no less, all with a laugh or two tossed in for good measure.

But they're not the only show in town on Sept. 4.

There’s even more tuba in store (along with plenty of other stuff, too) when the Shiner Hobo Band takes the stage from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, also inside the KC Hall.

And if you haven't gotten your tuba fix yet, Czech out the Czechaholics from 4-7 p.m. They’ve always got one or two back there someplace.

Outside, the live entertainment kicks off a whole half-hour sooner, with Vic Patek and his boys playing classic hits under the covered Bingo Stand stage from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Then, it's toLoveAndRescue, featuring the parish’s very own youth and music minister Jeremy Rodriguez from 12:30-3 p.m.

Then, hang on to your seats for the Yodel Blitz Band & Variety Show running 3-6:30 p.m. Sunday, followed by Bill Pekar & the Rainey Bros. from 6:30-10:30 p.m.

But wait, as they used to say in infomercial land. There’s still more!

That's because the Emotions shut things down with their always energetic set. They’ll play the main stage inside the KC Hall from 9 p.m. to midnight.

And that's just the musical lineup. They've got something to keep every age group entertained until well after the chickens have gone to roost.

Take, for instance, the many fine items available at their Country Store. You'll need to get there early, though. Sales start at 8 a.m.

Then you've got the big country auction kicking off at noon, full of tons of great collectibles and unique crafts. It’s followed by the cattle sale at 3 p.m.

Be sure to show up with your boots on for the bull riding, too, because they'll have mechanical bull rides going from 2-6 p.m., along with all sorts of games, face painting, ring toss, ball throw, Wheel of Fortune and a balloon artist.

Bingo will run 3-7 p.m., and the big drawing for raffle prizes to be held as soon as the auctions are done.

There’s even a washer pitching tournament at 4 p.m. and loads more. Plus, there's always something cold to drink over at the biergarten or inside at the hall.

Come hungry, too, because they always have plenty to eat. Service lines for Shiner's three-meats dinner plates with all the trimmings open at 10:30 a.m. and will shut down at 2 p.m. To-go plates can be picked up starting 10:30 a.m. across town at the Kaspar Pavilion on the back side of Green Dickson Park.

After the dinner plates are gone, it's time for Shiner's famous picnic hamburgers. They’ll be cooking those up throughout the afternoon and evening. There's something fun for everyone, so plan to come early and stay out late.
