The 136th annual St. John the Baptist Catholic Church picnic will take place Thursday, July 4 with all activities at the church’s grounds located at 7026 FM 957, approximately six miles southwest of Schulenburg, or approximately four and a half miles northeast of Moravia.

The picnic will begin with a Mass celebrated at 9 a.m. and a flag raising ceremony to follow at 10 a.m. All veterans are encouraged to attend.

A delicious traditional picnic lunch, consisting of homemade stew, fried chicken, and trimmings will be offered starting at 10:30 a.m.

Those wanting to, may dine inside the air-conditioned hall, or take home plates will also be available. All meal tickets are $13 each. The picnic does not have a drive through line and those preferring to take home lunch plates are suggested to park, purchase their meal tickets at the ticket booth, and stand in the take-out line to pick up their plates.

Also starting at 10:30 a.m., and for the remainder of the day and evening, a free dance under the pavilion will take place. Music will be provided by the Dujka Brothers, Red Ravens, Mark Halata and Texavia, and the Nathan Colt Young Band.

An auction will begin at 12:30 p.m. and a country store as well as a cake walk, ball throw, ring toss, “lil diggers” sand pile, and more entertainment will be available for the young and old throughout the day.

An assortment of food and drinks including snocones and hamburgers along with soft drinks, and beer will be available during the day and evening. A prize give-away drawing will take place at 8 p.m. and one does not need to be present to win any of the prizes.

The picnic will come to an end with a fireworks show taking place at 9:30 p.m. The parish welcomes everyone to come for a day that promises to be fun for all, and also visit the old St. John the Baptist Catholic Church built in 1888.
