The results are in for the Yoakum City Council elections. For Yoakum City Council, there were two open spots for Place 2 and Place 4. Winning the spot for Place 2 is Daniel Driskell. He received 208 votes while his opponent, Jay Cassell, received 196 votes. For Place 4, Mitchell Franz won the seat with 229 total votes. His opponent, Vanita Cheeves, got 195 votes. There were a total of 164 votes on election day and 281 early voters. The “unofficial total” numbers were 445 votes. Prior to early voting, the voter turnout was less than 7%.

“I had higher hopes for voter turnout, but at least it’s better than previous elections,” Mayor Carl O’ Neill said.

The two new board members will be sworn in at a special meeting at City Hall on June 20. There, they will also canvas the election.

“We are looking forward to working with the new council members,” O’ Neill said.
