7-on-7 football is not exactly a specialty for the Yoakum football team.

Yoakum went 4-0 at a state-qualifying tournament June 15 in Port Isabel.

The Bulldogs will play in the state tournament in the Division II bracket June 27, June 28, and June 29 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station.

In the tournament, Yoakum shut out Hidalgo 34-0, scored a 33-12 win against Kingsville, won against La Feria 27-26, and won against Rio Hondo 27-12 in the tournament championship game.

“7-on-7 is not really our thing, but our guys competed very well and they had fun,” Bulldog Coach Bo Robinson said.

“This tournament was the only one we played in.”

In the state tournament, the Bulldogs will play schools that routinely play 7-on-7 during the summer.

The key for Yoakum will be to play their best and see what happens.

“We want to go out a n d c o m p e t e a s we know we will be playing teams that play 7-on-7 each summer,” Robinson said. “We want to give it our best shot and hopefully get better as the 2024 season approaches.”
