Major League boys suffer gut-wrenching loss to Needville

Subhead

INGLESIDE – There are losses and there are losses and the 12u Major League boys lost a game for the ages Sunday evening Needville, 1-0.

Hallettsville had entered Section 4 Tournament finals undefeated before being turned back twice by Needville.

Tyler Tumis pitched an outstanding game and deserved a win. Tumis scattered five hits, struck out three and walked one. The lone Needville run scored on an error in the second inning.

Tumis threw 64 pitches, 42 of them for strikes.

Creek Burnes had the only Hallettsville hit.

Easton Ondruch pitched a complete game for Needville. He struck out three and walked one.

Hallettsville had virtually no traffic on the bases. Besides Burnes, the other base runner was Adam Halata, who drew a walk in the top of the first inning. Halata was on second when Tezmond Gutierrez hit a ground ball to Needville third baseman Jayson Arispe who flagged the ball down, but did not have a play and saved a run.

A bad hop single and an error led to Needville’s run.

Needville stranded six baserunners.

Needville forced a second game with a 19-0 win Saturday night.

“I was very proud of the way the boys bounced back from Saturday’s loss,” Hallettsville manager Davis Halata Jr. said. “The were a great group of kids and I am looking forward to seeing this group compete in the future.”

H’ville 4, Needville 3

Hallettsville gained the finals with a 4-3 victory over Needville

Will Halata started and the Needville runs were the first he had given up in tournament play. Tyler Tumis and Colsen Dworsky pitched in relief.

A three-run first was the key to the win. Colsen Dworsky led off with a triple before Adam Halata reached on catcher’s interference. Dworsky scored on an error and Will Halata walked. Tezmond Gutierrez’s single to right field scored Adam Halata and Will Halata scored on an infield out by Gunner Pekar.

Needville tied the score at 3-all. Hallettsville scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning. Ty Henneke walked and moved to second on Tumis’s sacrifice bunt. Creek Burnes drew a base on balls and scored on Colt Zavesky’s ground out to the second baseman.

Needville loaded the bases in the sixth inning before an outstanding running catch by Tumis flamed out the threat.
